Stability and strength of stainless steel stayed columns with one and two crossarms

  • Original language description

Prestressed steel stayed columns are studied with respect to their practical use. In current fashionable structures the demand for very slender columns produced of stainless steel is increasing, leading frequently to the prestressed stayed tube elements. This paper covers stability and strength nonlinear behavior of stayed tube columns made of austenitic steels, prestressed through four ties over one central or two crossarms located at thirds of the column length. Due to the prestressing both stability values and maximal loadings require to be analyzed using GMNIA (geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections), following the sudden change of energy after vanishing of pretension in some ties. Special attention is devoted to the fitting of ties at the crossarms, where fixed or sliding conditions are possible. Large numerical studies deal with various values and modes of the central column initial deflections, friction between ties and crossarm saddles and increasing stability or maximal loadings after adding another (second) crossarm to the stayed assembly. Finally some practical recommendations are suggested.
