    Analysis of Laboratory Compaction Methods of Roller Compacted Concrete – Moisture-Density Relationship

    Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) is an ordinary concrete poured and compacted with machines typically used for laying of asphalt road layers. Properties of RCC are strongly dependent on its density. Moisture-density relationship is used to determine the optimal water content to achieve maximum density of RCC mixtures. In the presented research, seven mixtures with constant aggregate to cement ratio and modified amount of water were prepared to determine the relationship between moisture and density of the material. The driest mixture contained 4.23 wt. % (weight percent) of water and the wettest mixture contained 5.5 wt. % of water. Apart from finding the optimal water content of the mix, one of the aims of the work was also to compare three methods of preparation of RCC laboratory samples with density as the comparative parameter. The first method used dynamic compaction by pneumatic hammer. The second method of compaction had a static character. The specimens were loaded by precisely defined force in laboratory loading machine to create the same conditions as during static rolling (in the Czech Republic, only static rolling is commonly used). Proctor test was used as the third method of compaction. Comparing the moisture-density curves showed an approximate match between samples compacted by Proctor test and samples compacted by pneumatic hammer. Densities of samples compacted by loading machine were systematically about 10 % lower.
