Racking Strength and Stiffness of Mechanically Jointed Cross Laminated Timber Wall Panels

  • Original language description

This paper deals with a research of mechanically jointed cross laminated timber (CLT) elements stressed by the in-plane shear. It describes the experimental analysis for determination of the racking strength and stiffness of wall panels of structural dimensions and behavior in the joints of layers and contacts between neighboring lamellas. Digital Image Correction (DIC) method was used to evaluate displacement and strain fields on a surface of the panel. The racking strength and stiffness of mechanically jointed CLT is ensured by fasteners connecting individual layers. The torsional stiffness of the joints between the layers and the slip modulus of the fasteners are determined for various number of the fasteners and orthogonally connected layers in the zones of lamella crossing. The results obtained from the performed experiments show that the wall panels made of mechanically jointed CLT elements provide sufficient stiffness and load-bearing capacity for use in the conventional building construction. They, therefore, represent a suitable alternative to common and widely used glued CLT elements.
