Application of cellulose fiber reinforcement in lime plasters

  • Original language description

The application of various waste/by-products can be perceived as a positive step towards the design of environmental-friendly materials and a way to ensure sustainable development in the building industry. The use of natural fibers provides a suitable reinforcement alternative to synthetic non-renewable fibers. The utilization of such materials is beneficial not only because of their low cost, good mechanical properties, and low thermal conductivity but also for their applicability in historical renders. In this paper, basic physical, mechanical, thermal, and hygric properties of lime plasters modified by waste wood fly ash as pozzolanic admixture and reinforced by cellulose fibers are presented. The experimental results show a significant positive effect of incorporated cellulose fibers, on the mechanical performance in particular. Therefore, the designed plasters can be considered as suitable for renovation works on historic masonries in line with the historical context.
