Measuring Overpressure Caused by the Detonation of Explosives in a Horizontal Tube
Original language description
The question of mechanical and thermal behavior of the solid phase arises in connection with the design of structural materials of underground structures due to shock waves caused by an explosion positioned in the closed space. The stress induced by the interaction of the shock waves can be initiated by terrorist attacks, vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) including gas explosion, car accident, etc. Explosion induces a set of waves occurring in the adjacent environment. If this environment is the air, an airborne shock wave formation is developed, which is a specific type of compression waves characterized by a rapid rise to maximum overpressure, followed by combination of a higher pressure and attenuation, aiming in the limit to the level of the current atmospheric pressure. The effect of detonation in an open space is significantly different from that of the explosion in semi-enclosed and closed spaces. In the case of detonation positioned inside of reflective surfaces, this pressure profile is considerably complicated as there are reflections and shock wave interactions. Sometimes, the resulting pressure versus time relationship includes several consecutive pressure peaks, caused by aftershocks, with the highest overpressure not being achieved by the first wave.
