Impact of laboratory ageing on properties of warm mix asphalt with high reclaimed asphalt content
Original language description
Lately there are various environmental trends permeating into road constructions. Use of reclaimed materials, lowering the manufacturing and compaction temperature, elimination of emissions, etc. This study presents 13 different warm mix asphalt variants with up to 50 % reclaimed asphalt (RA). The compared asphalt mixtures differed in amount of used RA (0%, 30% and 50%), in the gradation of used paving grade bitumen (50/70 or 70/100) and in applied warm mix asphalt additives or used techniques. Used additives were based on silanes and on different types of waxes (FT paraffin, amide wax, PE wax). Additionally foamed bitumen technology was applied as well. The asphalt mixtures were sampled during the trial section paving. The asphalt mixtures were compacted by impact compactor (according to EN 12697-33) and alternatively by gyratory compactor (EN 12697-30). The specimens were tested and then subjected to artificial laboratory ageing according to prEN 12697-52. The test specimens were stored in the oven with constant circulation of air at temperature of 85 °C for 5 days. Additionally another set of specimens was prepared and subjected to ageing at 85 °C for 10 days. The test results for virgin, 5 days aged and 10 days aged specimens were compared to evaluate the influence of additives on ageing of the asphalt mixture. Determined tests were stiffness modulus, resistance to crack propagation (SCB test) and flexural strength.
