Properties of concrete with plastic polypropylene aggregates

  • Original language description

Recycled plastic–based aggregate can be used as an alternative material to produce lightweight concrete with low environmental impact of both concrete and waste plastics. Polypropylene is one of the most widely used plastics on a global scale and unfortunately one of the least recycled. Its recycle ratio is 0.6% only. Since the use of some other types of plastics as aggregates in the building industry has already been explored, it seems to be an appropriate solution for recycling of polypropylene to use it in the production of eco-efficient concrete. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the resulting properties of concrete manufactured with waste polypropylene-based aggregates, in terms of its physical, mechanical, and hygric properties and, in particular, of preferable thermal attributes and optimum energy performance in building construction.
