Lateral-Torsional Buckling of Class 4 Stainless Steel Beams – Tests and Model Validation

  • Original language description

In the last two decades, research in stainless steel members has been focused mainly on hollow sections (CHS, SHS/RHS) as these are the typical stainless steel profiles. However, open sections are also being used in structures and the design rules for both local buckling of very slender sections as well as the lateral torsional buckling curves are based on very limited experimental and numerical research. There has been some limited research published for open section stainless steel beams as well, however with the main focus on stocky sections. As for stainless steel, open sections are typically welded, the slenderness of the cross-section will be usually higher. Especially when lateral torsional buckling is dominant. Therefore, at the Czech Technical University in Prague, six stainless steel welded I sections were tested for a model validation. The tests uses two stainless steel materials (austenitic and ferric), one section slenderness (Class 4 web and flange) and three beam slendernesses. The paper shows the details of the tests (i.e. load-deflection diagram, material tests and initial imperfections) and a FE model validation.
