Resistance of modified interior plasters to mould growth

  • Original language description

The unsatisfactory level of the indoor relative humidity level poses a significant load for building inhabitants due to negative health effects associated with the undesirable microbiological growth. Thus many attempts aimed at the development and comprehensive assessment of advanced building materials can be distinguished in the current literature in order to overcome the moisture related issues. In the present study, we determine the mould growth on plaster mixtures modified by the superabsorbent polymer (SAP) used for the increase of moisture buffering capability. Firstly, plaster samples with 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.% SAP admixture were placed in the cultivator and on 3% agar medium under laboratory conditions. Consequently, the acute test lasting for 7 days was performed by using fall method, respectively for 28 days in case of the rezistance test. Obtained results revealed a limited growth of mould in samples with SAP admixture compared to the reference sample. Furthermore, the samples with 1.5 wt.% SAP dosage showed no presence of mould despite the higher water retention capacity. In summary, the incorporation of SAP admixture into cement-lime plasters proved a beneficial influence on the mould occurrence and thus outlined a promising way for the improvement of ambient climate.
