Shape of historical fishponds as a source of dam breach risk

  • Original language description

Fishponds in the Czech Republic are a very important part of the landscape and provide many services. Most of them exist over centuries. These old fishponds were build according to different standards than those actual in present. The difference consist mainly in the shape of the dam bodies which were in general steeper in past as it was built without heavy machinery. The steeper slopes can have two main consequences. First, the seepage can be more intensive due to the shorter flow distance through the dam. Second, steeper slopes are in general less stable which can result in the dam breach in the worst case. In this paper, the investigation of the fishponds dams using remotely sensed data is presented together with the evaluation of one example dam from the point of view of the stability factor. The results indicate that the steepness of old fishponds dams is higher than the recommendations involved in present standards and that it can result in the stability lower than demanded by the standards.
