ANALYSIS OF UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES SUBJECTED TO EARTHQUAKE USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
Original language description
The present contribution addresses the influence of loading caused by earthquake on underground structures. The seismic effects on underground structures can be in general investigated either with the help of pseudo-static analysis or by employing fully dynamic calculations based on finite element method. The latter approach directly exploits recorded accelerations and allow for reflecting not only a nonlinear response of a layered subgrade, stiffness and shape of a tunnel lining, but also a mutual soil structure interaction. In case of pseudo-static analysis we usually rely on analytical methods or pseudo-static analysis based on FEM. The analytical methods most often adopt the so called free field conditions. The geometry and material parameters are then assumed to be the same along horizontal direction and the shear strain is constant within a given layer. These strains are then typicallyapplied in the form displacement loading prescribed along external vertical boundaries to yield estimate of internal forces developed in the lining. The 2D pseudo-staticFEM analysistypically assumes that vertical propagation of pressure and shear waves can be characterized as a time independent 1D problem, where all variables depend solely on the vertical coordinate y. The corresponding static loading caused by propagation of seismic waves is introduced through displacements prescribed along vertical boundaries of the analyzed model. However, the principal objective of this contribution is to describe an application of a fully dynamic analysis of an underground structure using the GEO FEM software. This finite element based software implements a combination of static and free-field boundary conditionsalong vertical boundaries. The presented approach of dynamic analysis is particularly suitable for an engineering practice.
