    Geotechnical Engineering Education (Focussed on Geotechnical structure design and performance)

    A successful design and performance of geotechnical structures strongly depend on the balance between four main columns of the geotechnical engineering: theoretical background – geomechanics – geotechnology – feeling for ground response. However, the care, which should be devoted to an individual geotechnical structure, strongly depends on the risk with which the design and performance are connected. A closer specification of this risk is, therefore, mentioned, as it most of all influences the demands for ground investigation and calculation models. The risk (uncertainties) of the basic steps of the whole process are shown in the same way as the specifications of a geological model, geotechnical data evaluation, geotechnical design models, calculation models and, finally, structure’s performance and control. These steps are presented on an example of earth structure, where soil is the main construction material (construction with the ground), and, therefore, has some specificity different from other geotechnical structures like foundation structures (construction on the ground) and underground structures (construction in the ground). In the end, a small note is devoted to the sustainability construction approach, as nowadays the structure should fulfil not only all limit states, but it should also be friendly to our environment.
