Thermal characteristics of bentonite cement based composites

  • Original language description

As a nuclear energy is increasingly utilized, a radioactive waste management becomes more and more important issue to be addressed. The radioactive waste is currently stored in special repositories, whose construction brings new challenges for civil and material engineering. In this article, a new type of concrete, with improved sorption properties, applicable as a casing barrier in the mentioned repositories, is designed. More precisely, impact of bentonite as a sorption admixture in concrete mixtures is investigated, in terms of physical properties determination. Since the one of the requirements for barrier’s structure is their thermal stability, the main emphasis is, in this article, put on thermal characteristics of designed concretes. The obtained results show that bentonite utilization as a partial cement replacement is less appropriate, however as a concrete admixture its application seems to be suitable. Furthermore, with an increasing amount of bentonite in the mixture, the thermal conductivity of concrete is decreased.
