Effect of a varying moisture diffusivity in the transport of gadolinium in a porous material

  • Original language description

Models of salts transport in porous media with constant diffusion parameters are known to usually fail to match experimental data. On the other hand, diffusivities depending on the moisture or salts concentrations can reproduce the data with good accuracy. In this paper we assess the effect of the water content dependence of the moisture diffusivity in the transport of gadolinium in a dry cement based composite investigated by neutron imaging. Such composites are planned to be an essential part of the multi-barrier systems in nuclear waste management, and their use for this purpose requires detailed studies of their transport properties. We interpret experimental data on the gadolinium transport using an advection-diffusion model of Bear and Bachmat in which sorption is described by a linear isotherm. The optimization of model parameters is based on the Levenberg-Marquardt method. We find that the difference between the results for the constant and varying moisture diffusivities is small, both yielding large discrepancies with respect to the data.
