Bentonite Pellets in the Construction of a Deep Gelogical Repository
Original language description
The planned Czech deep geological repository for radioactive waste will employ the multi-barrier system concept for the protection of the biosphere against the potential penetration of radionuclides. The basic natural barrier will consist of the rock mass itself at the proposed repository depth of around 500 m beneath the Earth’s surface. The natural barrier will be complemented by the so-called engineered barriers consisting of the waste disposal package (WDP), the bentonite (buffer and backfill) barriers and plugs that will separate the individual disposal spaces. A sufficient degree of bentonite compaction is crucial with concern to the optimal functioning of the bentonite barriers. One of the options regarding the design of the buffer and backfill involves the use of bentonite pellets (granulates) compacted via the application of high pressure. The research and development of pellets for their potential use in deep geological repositories has been underway in the Czech Republic since 2012. Pellets made of Czech bentonite have been used, for example, in the construction of an experimental plug for DGR use (the DOPAS – EPSP Experiment EU project). Moreover, a new mixture of pellets is currently being developed aimed at ensuring a higher level of dry density in the bentonite sealing layer. The objective is to attain a layer dry density of in excess of 1.55 g/cm3, and a minimum of 2 g/cm3 for the pellets alone.
