Analytical maps as a basis for understanding the development of rural architecture
Original language description
The paper deals with the creation of analytical maps that study the development of rural settlements in the 19th and 20th centuries. Analytical maps serve as a basis for Artistic and Historical Research of rural architecture. The Artistic and Historical Research focuses on a specific part, an element or a type of surveyed buildings in a selected time period. Its results can be further developed and interpreted in a wider cultural context of the respective rural region. In this way, it is possible to describe the cultural and social environment of the given rural region and external influences which have guided its future development in the given time period. The purpose of analytical maps is to provide a reliable spatial and temporal framework for future analyses. The analytical maps are based on digitized archival maps. The archive maps are processed using GIS tools and processes - georeferencing, vectorization, spatial analysis, etc. The possibilities of presenting these maps on the web are also demonstrated. The article provides an overview of old and current large-scale map datasets available in the Czech Republic. The basic properties of maps with regard to the solved problems are stated. The main goal of the article is to apply the basic methods of processing old maps for creation and presentation of maps of the built-up area development.
