Mechanical and Setting/Hardening Conditions of Cement Pastes for Evaporator Concentrates Incorporating Admixtures

  • Original language description

With the rising amounts of radioactive wastes and the planned construction of safe long-term disposal facilities there is obvious need to find appropriate immobilization techniques for specified types of waste. The paper investigates the properties of binders suitable for the encapsulation of evaporator concentrates - an intermediate-level radioactive waste rich in borates and other salts. The article presents a binder based on a mixture of cements with lowered amount of gypsum content to deal with high setting times of cement in the presence of borates. Further on, selected admixtures are added to the system to increase the sorption capacity of such a mixture, namely natural zeolite, bentonite, blast furnace slag and silica fume. The investigation was aimed at the effects of these admixtures on the setting and hardening conditions and mechanical properties. In the dose of 5% of the binder weight, none of the admixtures has a significant effect on the compressive neither flexural strength. Setting times are very slightly prolonged by the presence of blast furnace slag and bentonite, silica fume slightly shortens the setting and hardening periods, while zeolite does not have a marked impact.
