Is TDR method applicable for moisture content measurement in salt laden materials?

  • Original language description

Experimental investigation of the influence of salt presence on applicability of time domain reflectometry (TDR) method for moisture content measurement in porous materials was carried out in this study. The analysis was performed on calcium silicate material with the use of TDR-based device TDR/MUX/mts having rise time of about 250 ps. The measurement was conducted using advanced laboratory two-rod sensors. Finally, the obtained data of complex relative permittivity were assigned to the moisture content by reference gravimetric method within the calibration experiments where the penetrating medium was pure distilled water, 0.1 M and 0.01 M NaCl water solutions respectively. The acquired results demonstrated the applicability of high frequency microwave methods for moisture content measurement in porous building materials even in the case of presence of water soluble inorganic salts.
