    Robust and Inexpensive Test on Passively Confined Concrete for Efficient Design of Concrete Structures

    This contribution presents a novel experimental method recently developed at CTU in Prague. The method can be used to identify material parameters related to concrete compression under lateral confinement. Such tests are typically time consuming and expensive, since they require a triaxial testing machine. In the new test, a concrete specimen is surrounded by metal hoops, which are activated by lateral expansion of concrete and provide passive confinement. In contrast to the triaxial test, the present method requires only a uniaxial testing machine with displacement control. Moreover, the method should deliver more valuable results because, in most applications (such as circular columns with spirals), the lateral stress is negligible prior to dominant loading, which is properly captured by the stress history in the newly proposed experiment.
