Computational analysis of energy performance of advanced moisture responsive plasters

  • Original language description

Modified plasters with enhanced moisture accumulation properties are investigated from the points of view of hygrothermal performance and energy efficiency. The modification is based on the addition of super absorbent polymers (SAP) to a standard mixture of lime-cement plaster which can give those plasters an ability of natural controlling of relative humidity levels in both building envelopes and interior environments. In addition, such modification can contribute to an increase of energy efficiency of the entire wall assembly. In order to provide a sufficiently complex analysis in that respect, a series of laboratory experiments is conducted at first and basic physical, thermal and hygric parameters of the modified plasters are determined. Then, a computational analysis is performed to analyze the effect of SAP on energy performance. The results show that the addition of SAP to plaster mixtures can improve the hygric, thermal and energy performance of the entire building envelope.
