SEARCHING FOR COMMON TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES OF 19TH–20TH-CENTURY MOSAIC MORTARS ASCRIBED TO THE NEUHAUSER COMPANY

  • Original language description

Mortar beds of four late 19th-century mosaics from the Czech Republic and one mosaic from Austria were investigated using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), differential thermogravimetry (DTG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) to search for common materials’ features supporting the hypothesis of their origin in the Austrian workshop of the Neuhauser company. A significant similarity of mortars from three Czech (Prague) mosaics was found. They contained 12–21 wt% linseed oil. Their technology was based on traditional 17th-century recipes. Their Austrian origin seems highly probable. Two remaining mortar beds differed not only from the Prague mosaics but also from each other.
