Isothermal thermodilatometric study of illitic clay during sintering
Original language description
Solid-state sintering in illite based ceramics is investigated by thermodilatometric measurements during the isothermal regime. The samples were dehydroxylated before measurements, because two overlapping processes could be affected the results, namely the expansion of samples during the dehydroxylation of illite and the contraction during a sintering. The measurements are provided at the temperatures of 900, 950, 1000, 1050, 1100, and 1150 °C. The relative expansion of the samples is measured for a period of 10 hrs. From the obtained results and analysis of the sintering shrinkage during a period up to 2.5 hrs, either the volume diffusion or the grain boundary diffusion as a dominant sintering mechanism are determined and the corresponding diffusion constants are approximated.
