Differential scanning calorimetry of illite/smectite-CaCO3 mixtures
Original language description
The products of traditional ceramics have still a dominant position in industrial applications of non-metallic materials. Their production is based on clays, mostly illitic. This is true especially for bricks and tiles. The addition of CaO causes the formation of new mineral phases (such as anorthite). An increase of anorthite content improves the properties of ceramic materials. In this paper, the formation of new phases in the ceramic materials based on illitic clay during firing up to 1100 °C is studied. The samples are made from illite/smectite with a different amount of laboratory CaCO3 (from 17.6 mass% to 25.6 mass%). The crystallization in the samples are studied using differential scanning calorimetry. It is found that the crystallization peak of anorthite and gehlenite increases with the amount of CaCO3 in the samples up to 21.6 mass%.
