An influence of the firing temperature on elastic constants of alumina porcelain
Original language description
Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio are measured on the cylindrical ceramic samples composed of 36 wt.% of kaolin, 30 wt.% of alumina, 12 wt.% of fireclay, and 22 wt.% of feldspar. The samples are fired at temperatures from 100 °C to 1250 °C, and measurements are provided at the room temperature. It is found that Young's and shear modulus keep their values almost constant (12 GPa and 4 GPa) up to 900 °C. After firings above 900 °C, a steep increase in Young's and shear modulus is observed due to sintering, and the final values of these moduli reach 115 GPa and 48 GPa, respectively. Poisson's ratio ranges between 0.4 and 0.5 after firings up to 900 °C. These high values are caused by the anisotropy of the cylindrical samples. Above 1000 °C, Poisson's ratio decreases in its value due to the presence of the glassy phase. The value of Poisson's ratio is 0.20 after firing at 1250 °C.
