The five oldest underground railways were put into operation in the 19th century – the metro in London, Athens, Istambul, Budapest and Glasgow. Undoubtedly, the world’s primacy belongs to the London Underground. Ranking in continental Europe is difficult to determine. Regardless of the order the undergrounds of the19th century becames the basis of the world’s most widespreat and rational means of public transport. The further development of oldest undergrounds is documented.
