Effect of lmmersion Time in Acetone and Isopropanol on Hydration Stoppage of Hardened Cement Paste

  • Original language description

In order to study microstructure development of cementitious materials, hydration processes should be stopped before analysis. Additionally, many analytical methods require dry samples, and thus, free water must be removed from the samples. Oven-drying, vacuum-drying or freeze-drying are classified as direct drying methods, which are very effective in terms of water removal; nevertheless, these techniques can alter composition and microstructure ofthe studied sample. Generally, solvent replacement is considered as a gentle water removal technique that helps to preserve the microstructure ofhardened cementitious materials. In this study, two widely used solvents, namely isopropanol and acetone were used for hydration stoppage of hardened cement paste. Impact of soaking time on the preservation of microstructure and water content are analyzed by means of Mercury intrusion porosimetry and thermogravimetry
