High temperature dilatometric measurement of Basalt

  • Original language description

Basalt in a raw and cast form was temperature exposed to explore thermal expansion using high temperature dilatometry. This igneous rock is inert, homogeneous, denser aluminium silicate material with good chemical and abrasion resistance. It evinces also interesting thermo-physical properties that can be utilized in the Carnot battery. In this respect, the basalt performance at high temperatures was explored. The tested samples were directly heated in the air atmosphere from a laboratory temperature up to 750 °C. From the measured data, the basalt thermal expansion coefficient at the analysed temperature range was calculated. Moreover, chemical composition and fundamental structural properties of basalt were determined for samples after the temperature exposure and compared with the reference ones. Results show the visible effect of material behaviour during temperature exposure and heat stabilization of cast basalt.
