Austenitic Stainless Steel I-section Beam-column Tests and Numerical Modelling
Original language description
Stainless steel became a relatively common material for load-bearing structures in corrosive environment or when maintenance is difficult. The existing design rules cover all common cases. However, for some, the experimental or numerical data are very limited. This includes studies on welded I-section beam-columns. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation into the structural performance of welded I-section members loaded by compression and major axis bending moment. In total, eighteen test specimens were fabricated from grade EN 1.4301 austenitic stainless steel plates using two welding methods, namely conventional and laser welding. The experimental program on pin-ended long beam-columns is described in the paper. The loading eccentricities for the tests varied to provide a wide range of bending moment-to-axial load ratios. Nonlinear finite element models were developed in ABAQUS software and validated using the test results to simulate the beam-column behaviour accurately.
