    The drinking water distribution system is the basic infrastructure of urban areas. A reliable supply of drinking water for the population at an affordable price is a crucial function of the state. Therefore, the local municipalities usually own at least a part of the water distribution companies. Rising energy prices have significantly impacted final water prices in recent years. This paper shows concrete energy savings in transporting and storing raw and drinking water. At the same time, it deals with the technical possibilities of energy exploitation of residual heads. The pay-back period on investment for installing turbines in existing systems is incomparably shorter than in stand-alone run-off river hydropower plants. In addition, the electricity produced in this way is highly environmentally friendly because it uses existing infrastructure and does not disrupt ecosystems. It allows profitable combination with other renewable micro-energy sources, such as solar on the reservoir roof. First, we show the suitable operating nodes in the water distribution with the possibility of significant energy savings or electricity production. Subsequently, experience with designing and operating Pelton water turbines on drinking water systems is presented. Attention is paid to new materials for producing crucial turbine parts - such as carbon fiber plastics. Their use significantly reduces investment and operating costs (repair costs). All this while maintaining strict requirements for the contact of materials with drinking water. The design considers the operational specifics - electricity production has low priority. High-quality drinking water transport has the highest priority. The economic analysis considers investment requirements, maintenance requirements, and operation.
