    Recommendation for calculating the interaction diagrams for columns with multi-spiral reinforcement

    The interaction diagram of a cross section presents an envelope of all statically admissible combinations of internal forces, which is used in engineering practice for efficient design and assessment of reinforced concrete members. Currently valid design codes offer guidelines only for typical layouts of transverse reinforcement; however, for multi-spiral reinforcement (MSR) layout no such recommendation exists. MSR columns offer not only higher strength originating from confined concrete, improved ductility, and energy dissipation, but also an almost arbitrary shape of the cross section. The scope of the present work is the development of a guideline specifically tailored for MSR columns. The form of the formulae is inspired by the existing codes and is validated by means of nonlinear finite element simulations with state-of-the-art constitutive models for concrete. Adoption of the presented approach should result into immediate material savings as the potential of both structural materials---concrete and steel---is used more efficiently.
