Fire Protection of Steel and Concrete Structures by Alkali-Activated Cement – Adhesion and Fire Experiment
Original language description
The objective of this work is to improve the environment-friendliness and the sustainability of steel and concrete structures by providing them with advanced protection from the impacts of fire. Unprotected steel elements have low fire resistance, and need to be protected. Concrete structures have greater fire resistance than other structures. After a fire, however, the condition of concrete structures may be compromised. The cover layer often falls off, and the steel reinforcement is exposed to fire. This is accompanied by a significant reduction in the fire resistance of the entire concrete element. A fire protection layer based on alkali-activated cements offers a material with a very low level of CO2 production in its manufacture. Research was carried out to determine the possibility of protecting steel elements with a fire protection layer made of alkali-activated cement. The protective layer was shown to possess excellent insulating properties. Experiments were performed on the adhesion of alkali-activated cement mortar to steel, wood and concrete elements. Experiments were carried out on the performance of the fire protection layer on a concrete beam in a fire furnace. This paper presents experiments on the adhesion of alkali-activated cement mortar to steel and concrete, and the performance of this protective layer on a concrete beam in a fire test.
