Influence of different surfactants on hydrated lime pastes modified with CNTs

  • Original language description

Nanomaterials such as graphene or carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the potential to improve mechanical behavior of lime-based renders and plasters, and make those materials suitable for restoration works in terms of strength. However, the performance of nanoparticles is conditioned by their dispersion within the material matrix. This research focuses on the ways to ensure homogenous distribution of nanomaterials; the methods of dispersion are tested on hydrated lime pastes containing CNTs. In the experimental work, mixtures were prepared using physical dispersion in the form of a two-step homogenization method combined with the use of surfactants, namely Tween 80 and Triton X 100, and superplasticizer Dynamon SX. For the hardened samples, basic physical and mechanical properties were determined. the results showed only a slight improvement of mechanical properties caused by the use of CNTs and even a decrease in those properties in case of the mixtures containing surfactants, as the surfactants produced foam while mixing and consequently caused an increase in porosity. This indicates that in case of highly porous materials such as hydrated lime pastes, the negative effect of growing porosity on material strength outweighs the reinforcing effect of CNTs. Therefore, used nanomaterial dispersion methods should avoid producing additional pores.
