Acoustic properties of rubber crumb boards originated from end-of-life tires

  • Original language description

The generation of end-of-life tires poses a substantial environmental burden since the recycling or other valorization option are not available or available to process such a high volume of produced tires. In this regard, the utilization of crushed rubber crumb as acoustic material could be accepted as a viable solution for overbridging two emerging issues. Design and development of rubber crumb-based acoustic insulation boards may improve the acoustic comfort of modern houses, offices, or other civil engineering buildings. This study investigates the acoustic properties of three types of rubber crumb boards with the help of laboratory-designed mini acoustic chambers. As reported, the rubber crumb board having a thickness of about 30 mm is capable to decrease the sound pressure level by an average of about 9 to almost 12 dB according to the used particle diameter and the bulk density. However, this capability differs significantly according to applied frequency, since the best performance was obtained for 200 Hz, 800 Hz, and 4000 Hz.
