Pollution knows no borders. How to deal with emerging pollutants to ensure a healthy future?
Original language description
Emerging pollutants are substances that have recently been identified as potentially harmful to human health and the environment. They include a wide range of chemicals, especially pharmaceuticals, corrosion inhibitors, and industrial chemicals. At present, one focus is set on the group of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Also, microplastics have recently gained more attention as a potentially emerging pollutant. These particles could adsorb harmful substances, accumulate them and act as carrier into organisms. Therefore, emerging pollutants pose a challenge for regulators and researchers, as their environmental and health impacts are not yet fully understood, and they are not yet subject to specific regulations. The emission of such substances to air, water and soil will not stop at state borders. Hence, it is in everybody’s responsibility to address mitigation and remediation of emerging pollutants in the environment. We want to discuss which substances are of specific concern for human health and ecosystems. How to prioritize them and how international cooperation can help to create solutions for a sustainable future. Results from European projects will be presented covering determination and assessment of organic micropollutants and microplastics in the River Labe/Elbe.
