Bolted Gusset Plates Connections in Compression
Original language description
An experimental study was conducted on six bolted single-brace eccentric gusset plate connection specimens with varying geometries. Numerical models were created using Abaqus FEA and validated against the tested specimens. A subsequent numerical parametric study showed the influence of eight geometrical and material parameters on the ultimate and critical load of the connection. The results were compared with the predictions of existing analytical models. The study showed that the placement and number of bolts in the connection had minimal impact on compressive resistance. Additionally, it was demonstrated that parts of the gusset plate outside the Whitmore section contributed to the compressive resistance of the connection, even though they may not have developed a plastic hinge along the whole plate width. For the tested connection geometry, the most accurate and safe analytical prediction was provided by a model that assumed the formation of two plastic hinges in the connection (both in gusset plate and the connected splice plate), accounted for second-order effects, and reduced plate bending resistance due to axial force.
