Thermophysical and Electrical Properties of a Natural Zeolite
Original language description
Thermophysical processes occurring during the firing of zeolite (mined in Nizny Hrabovec, Slovakia) was studied in terms of conventional thermal analyses (differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry, dilatometry), acoustic emission, scanning electron microscopy, and DC conductivity measurements. The evaporation of the water molecules trapped in the cavities and channels of zeolite led to a continuous gradual decrease in the samples mass up to ~850 °C. Clinoptilolite (the major mineral phase of zeolite) transformed into an amorphous phase above 800 °C. The sintering process started at 900 °C in the presence of liquid phase. DC conductivity revealed that the dominant charge carriers, mostly due to the dehydration of zeolite, are H+ and OH– ions up to the collapse of its structure. At higher temperatures alkali ions Na+, K+, and Ca2+ became the major charge carriers with conduction activation energy of 3.51 eV (from 830 °C to 930 °C). Above 960 °C the appearance of glassy phase supported the DC conductivity carried by the alkali ions and the activation energy reached 1.67 eV.
