Original language description
The use of wood in the construction industry is increasing due to its sustainable and ecological properties. However, in order to ensure adequate fire resistance of timber structures, it is essential to thoroughly investigate their behaviour during a fire. A key factor is to determine the depth of the charred layer. This paper compares simplified and advanced methods of calculating charring rate and depth. Simplified methods, such as standard calculations, assume a constant charring rate and do not consider the variable properties of the wood. In contrast, advanced methods, including numerical models and probabilistic approaches, allow for variable factors such as wood density, oxygen concentration and cracks. The results show that probabilistic approaches that incorporate nonlinearities provide more accurate estimates of charring depth and are essential for optimizing the fire resistance of wood structures in natural fires.
