Commercial microwave links (CMLs) are point-to-point radio links that are widely used in telecommunication networks, particularly densely deployed in populated urban areas. These links have considerable potential as opportunistic rainfall sensors due to their sensitivity to signal attenuation caused by droplets along the transmission path. Despite a straightforward power law relation between signal attenuation and rainfall intensity, precise quantitative precipitation estimates using microwave links remain obscured by uncertainty, which is difficult to estimate.
