Optimizing and Comparing the Performance of Elbow Draft Tubes

Draft tubes for low-head hydropower plant localities can be responsible for up to 50% of kinetic energy recovery back to pressure. The efficiency of the draft tube depends on the velocity field leaving the runner and the shape of the draft tube. Due to the high complexity of the elbow draft tube shape, using the shape optimization techniques using CFD is highly desirable. Recently, there has been a great deal of interest in using shape optimization for rotary machines in general. In this paper, we show the applicability of shape optimization using CFD for elbow draft tubes for variable-speed propeller turbines. The results of the performed shape optimization are analysed in detail. Emphasis is placed on comparing the hydraulic characteristics of the selected elbow draft tube and the given straight draft tube. The most important result achieved is a set of the best shapes of elbow draft tubes ("Pareto front") with the best pressure regeneration for different draft tube construction heights. Furthermore, the results show that the best-optimized shapes of the elbow draft tube are very close to the characteristics of a straight draft tube, practically in the entire operating range, which underlines the quality of the achieved optimization.
