The valorization of dredged sediments (DS) presents a sustainable solution to managing waste while addressing resource scarcity and environmental concerns. This review explores treatment techniques and reuse options for DS, focusing on its application in the construction industry. However, disposal poses challenges due to potential contamination with heavy metals and organic pollutants. In this regard, effective treatment methods are necessary to ensure safe reuse. Physical treatments, such as separation, dewatering, and washing, reduce contaminants and improve DS usability. Chemical methods involve oxidation and immobilization to neutralize or stabilize pollutants, while biological approaches leverage microorganisms and plants for degradation. Thermal treatments, including vitrification and pyrolysis, immobilize or destroy contaminants under high temperatures. Treated DS has been successfully utilized in road construction, structural fills, and as raw materials in bricks and concrete. Despite its potential, challenges like contamination variability and lack of standardized guidelines hinder large-scale DS reuse. Advancements in treatment technologies and regulatory frameworks are essential to maximize DS valorization. This approach supports environmental conservation, cost savings, and circular economy principles, highlighting DS as a viable alternative to traditional construction materials and a sustainable resource for diverse applications.
