Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) pose a major issue in urban drainage, especially during intense rainfall when system capacity is exceeded. Efficient separation of suspended solids in CSO structures is crucial to limit pollution entering receiving waters. This study explores how design parameters affect separation efficiency in a pipe-type CSO using computational fluid dynamics. The CSO was modeled using a VOF model combined with Lagrangian particle tracking representing pollution. Design variables such object length and overflow slot geometry shape were evaluated under varying flow rates. The results confirm that longer chambers significantly improve separation efficiency due to increased residence time. Changes in slot geometry, however, had only a limited and inconsistent impact, suggesting a secondary role influenced by specific flow conditions.
