Ba, Pb and Zn immobilization in magnesium potassium phosphate cement matrix
Original language description
The safe management of materials containing heavy metals (HMs) is an important issue for the protection of the environment. Immobilization treatment is an effective technology for the accomplishment of this goal. The suitability of magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) for the fixing of HMs was investigated. The developed material, composite, has been evaluated based on the experimental analysis of its structural and mechanical properties and the leachability of the metals studied. Although the admixing of HMs led to the slight reduction in the porosity value, they damaged significantly mechanical parameters tested. However, the retained mechanical strength was still high enough for specific building applications. On the other hand, the hardened composite matrix showed an outstanding ability to immobilize HMs as their concentrations in the prepared leachate were very low and the immobilization ratios achieved were close to 100%.
