Engineering design of sewage sludge pump-pipeline systems in WWTP of Brno
Original language description
The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the city of Brno is the second largest in the Czech Republic. A recent engineering design project focused on a major reconstruction of its sewage sludge transport technology. This undertaking required an innovative approach based on reliable input parameters, particularly those derived from hydraulic calculations for sludge pump-pipeline systems. These calculations needed to be supported by detailed knowledge of the rheological behaviour of various types of pumped sewage sludge. This paper presents the measured rheological parameters of different sludge types and examines their influence on key aspects of the transport system design. Rheological properties of primary and secondary thickened sludges, mixed sludge, and digested sludge were obtained through laboratory tests using a rotational viscometer. The sludges were found to exhibit Herschel-Bulkley behaviour, with rheological parameters varying with the total solids concentration, which ranged from 4% to 7% by mass. The engineering design addressed several critical components, including the determination of flow regime, prediction of the system curve, and selection of optimal operating points for pumps as part of the overall pump-pipeline system configuration. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of friction and local losses in shaping the final design. A detailed case study of a selected pump-pipeline system transporting mixed sludge is also provided.
