The influence of shear strength on the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete structural members strengthened by FRP strips

  • Original language description

This article investigates the effect of shear on the load-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by CFRP strips. The authors investigate the effect of shear cracks in concrete which lead to a loss of composite action between CFRP and concrete reducing the load-bearing capacity of the beam. The research follows on earlier work presenting a computational tool for the analyses of structural behavior of strengthened beams. As part of the earlier work, experiments were conducted on RC beams for validation. During the testing, it was found that the failure occurred before the CFRP laminate itself failed, which was unexpected. This paper explains and numerically simulates this behaviour by taking into account the shear strength and emphasizes the importance of considering the loss of composite effect in simulations. The findings also validate a new modified computational tool for the prediction of the load-bearing capacity of strengthened beams.
