Hop extract and its use in construction

  • Original language description

Hop products are used in the cosmetic and food industries. They have proven antibacterial effects and are also used as drugs or in food industry. The use of hops in construction has never been tested before. In this study, the biocidal effects of hop extract against algae and moulds, which frequently form biofilms covering building materials, were investigated. In the next step, the impact of adding hop extract to a lime plaster at its water absorption was studied. Additionally, the effect of coating on colour changes on the plaster surfaces was macroscopically observed. In the final step, the environmental safety of hop extract against non-target organisms (crustaceans, yeasts) was verified. All experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions. The results did not demonstrate the effectiveness of hop extract against biological pests and no ecotoxicity towards model organisms was confirmed. In terms of protecting building materials against biofilm, the use of this extract seems insignificant. On the other hand, the use of hop demonstrated improvements in certain properties of building materials, and its application holds any potential. Primarily in indoor spaces, where the use of a non-toxic fragrance could be advantageous, as it would not negatively affect human health.
