Numerical simulation of the time-dependent and rate-dependent behavior in CFRP-concrete interfaces
Original language description
The use of externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (EB-CFRP) for retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) structures has proven to be highly effective in civil engineering applications. However, the performance of EB-CFRP systems is influenced by factors such as loading rate and time-dependent effects, which are not adequately addressed in existing standards and guidelines. This study employs numerical simulations to investigate the interfacial behavior of CFRP-concrete systems, focusing on rate-dependent and time-dependent effects. A three-dimensional (3D) lattice discrete particle model (LDPM) is used to represent concrete at the mesoscale, while a creep model based on the micro-prestress solidification (MPS) theory is incorporated to capture time-dependent deformations. A parametric analysis is conducted to examine the influence of loading rate on the load responses, showing that higher loading rates lead to increased load for post-peak behavior. Additionally, the long-term behavior of the interface under sustained loading is analyzed. The results show that sustained loading causes continuous displacement increase due to creep, reducing the debonding failure threshold. The strain distribution in the FRP plate is slightly different due to the creep behavior of concrete. The findings provide valuable insights into the rate and time-dependent behavior of CFRP-concrete interfaces, contributing to the improved design and long-term performance assessment of EB-CFRP strengthening systems.
