Thermal and hygric properties of alkali-activated metakaolin exposed to high temperature load

  • Original language description

Metakaolin is a widely studied precursor for preparation of alkali activated materials (AAM). Some of the potential applications of AAM are based on their resistance to elevated temperature. The elevated temperature causes not only phase alteration in alkali-activated metakaolin but also the change in pore system. The present paper specifically studies alkali-activated metakaolin prepared with Si/Al molar ratio 1.8 and Al/K 1.2. This material was selected based on preceding experiments where it featured very good mechanical properties. This contribution is focused on the relationship between thermal load of activated metakaolin and its thermal conductivity and ability to transport liquid water and water vapor. It was found that the porosity of the studied material gradually increased from the ambient temperature to the 1000 °C. The measured transport parameters responded to the increasing porosity in the expected way.
