TORNADO HIT IN SOUTH MORAVIAN REGION IN 2021

  • Original language description

Tornadoes are rare in the Czech Republic. Buildings here are not prepared for tornadoe strike by design. Damage can therefore be higher and restoration more difficult. One of the largest tornadoes in the history of the Czech Republic swept across the South Moravia region at 300 kph in the evening of 24 June 2021. Critically affected were 7 villages in the area and there were extensive damage to municipal and private property, six deaths and number of injuries. Through a combination of financial support, volunteer work and community initiatives, the affected areas have gradually been rebuilt and made more resilient to future disasters. Some actions were targeted for immediate help, some for longer-term assistance. Moravská Nová Ves was one of the most damaged municipalities and on its example the impact of the devastating tornado and subsequent recovery is demonstrated, namely on examples of the church of St. Jacob, the town hall, the elementary school, the kindergarten, House No. 117, The Doctor’s House and the Sokol Hall.
