An example of glazed space (hall) attached to the front facade of administrative building was used for the comparison of the two concepts using the simulation software ESP-r for zonal modelling and FLUENT for CFD modeling. In the zonal modelling approachthe glazed space was represented by 18 fully mixed sub-zones separated by fictitious surfaces. A nodal flow network interconnecting all the sub-zones approximated the indoor airflow. The flow network together with the energy model of the glazed space considered the conservation of mass and energy (not momentum). A two-dimensional steady-state model was considered for the CFD simulation. The boundary conditions were transferred from the ESP-r climate database. Both the zonal and CFD modelling approachesgave very similar results in terms of air temperature distribution, maximum air temperatures, and air temperature differences between the floor and the ceiling.
