    Microstructural Features of Cr-V Ledeburitic Steel Saturated with Nitrogen

  • Original language description

    The P/M made VANADIS 6 cold work steel was plasma nitrided. Important surface characteristics like the microstructure, the hardness and microhardness, the nitrogen concentration depth profiles and the phase constitution were investigated. Before the plasma nitriding, the material consists of the matrix containing both the twinned and the dislocation martensite, and two types of carbides. The first type was identified as the MC-phase and the second one as M7C3-carbide. Plasma nitriding led to the increase of both the surface hardness and the microhardness, due to the nitrogen saturation of thin near surface region. Firstly, the martensite is saturated by nitrogen, up to the solid solubility limit. After the solid solubility limit is exceeded, various nitrides like the Fe4N- and Fe3N-phase are formed.
